Making Inferences

My little guy, Ty, loves to learn about animals and how they live. While looking at this book, which is a little bit above his reading level right now, he said something that made the teacher in me instantly shine with pride! HE MADE INFERENCES!  Of course, this isn’t the first time he makes inferences, but this time was pretty impressive.

He looked at the pictures on the left page, then the pictures on the right page.

“Mom! Look at the giraffe beetle!”

I asked him how he knew it was called a giraffe beetle.

“Because on this page, there’s this animal with a picture of a horse in the top corner.  I already know that it’s called a seaHORSE.  This page has a picture of a beetle and a giraffe in the top corner, so it must be a giraffe beetle!”

He looked at me funny when I whooped out loud and gave him a high five :P

We then read the book together and figured out what the other animals were named after.  He guessed them all! What a smart cookie!

It’s always such a proud moment when your students “get it”, but when you see your own child’s thought process, it’s an even more wonderful moment.

  1. That is so sweet! I love moments like that.

  2. Way to go!!!! I saw your post at TpT and had to come over. Looks like a very neat book!

  3. I found you over at the TPT Forums. I'm a new follower. It is always exciting when kids read!! My kids look at me like I'm a fruitcake sometimes.
