You Know You're a Canadian Teacher When...

1. You drive for an hour just to get to your school and all you see are trees and the occasional moose.
2. You don't mind freezing your butt off at the local arena on a Saturday afternoon to watch your students play hockey.
3. Your year-end field trip lasts three days because it takes an entire day to drive there and another to come back.
4. You can't go out for recess because there's a bear (or cougar, or any other wild animal) in the school yard.
5. It's dark outside when you leave the house and it's dark again when you leave the school.
6. You let your students go outside for independent reading and they witness a cow giving birth in the field next door (bonus health lesson!).
7. Recess is cancelled all day because of cold weather, but the kids all play outside after school because -23C (-9F) isn't that cold.
8. You show up to class with a Tim Horton's coffee instead of a Starbuck's.
9. You think a Timmie's gift card is the best teacher gift ever.
10. You constantly have to fix spelling on American worksheets before your students point out that something is spelled wrong.
11. There's a picture of the Queen somewhere in the school.
12. You can sing your national anthem in both French and English.
13. You correct your students when they say "zee" instead of "zed".
14. Some of your students take a week off in October to go hunting.
15. You school has televisions tuned in to the important hockey games and the scores are announced on the PA system.
16. A moose steak and deer sausage are common teacher gifts.
17. Students bring in fresh salmon, then learn to filet, smoke and cook it in foods class.
18. The closest First Nations Reserve hosts a powwow on school property and the entire student and staff population learns to drum, make dream catchers and dance.
19. You proudly wear your favourite's hockey team's colours to school because they made the playoffs this year.
20. You make up a hockey pool with your students and use the statistics in your math lessons.
21. There are more quads and snow machines in the school parking lot than there are cars.
22. Parents drive their kids to school on snow machines because the school buses are cancelled due to bad weather.
23. Students come to school with their fishing gear because they're heading to the lake right after school.
24. Students are reading their hunting manuals during independent reading because their hunting license test is coming up.
25. Your students know where you live and what you drive and you have no problem with that.
26. You watch Mr. D. on CBC.
27. You can still pray in school.
28. Your school still has an open door policy.
29. There are at least 2 Tim Hortons on your daily commute.
