Our Last Week of School

Ahhhhhh Summer.....It is finally here!  School is FINALLY over for two whole months!  What a long year it was.  Friday, June 27th was our last day of school.  The last week of school is always more relaxed since all of our report cards are done.  It's a great time to just have fun with your students!

Even though it's a more relaxed time, I still favour a lot structure in my classroom. The last week of school, we worked on yearbooks.  I've had this product in my Teachers Pay Teachers store for a while now, but never really had the opportunity to use it myself since I was a substitute teacher.  This year was different.  I became a permanent teacher in February and was able to stay with my group until the very last day of school.  What a treat it was for me!

I printed off the pages that I thought were more appropriate for Grades 4 and 5 and we went at it.  It was really fun to come up with a list of things we had done during the year!  What great memories and what a great way to keep these memories!  The students loved the project.  They especially loved the page where I wrote them each a special message, and the autograph pages.  Since some of my students are moving away this summer, it was a great way for them to remember each other.  I wish I had thought of taking pictures of the finished products!

On Tuesday, we made homemade pizza from scratch.  This is a project that I never thought I could tackle with them when I started in September, but they have come such a long way in the last 10 months that I was sure we'd be able to get through it without any major problems.  And we did!  Kids picked their own groups of 3, came up with a list of toppings for their pizzas and decided what job each one of them would have.  Everyone brought something from home and I provided the ingredients for the dough and the sauce.  What an awesome morning we had and the kids were so incredibly proud of their pizzas! Most of them brought some home for their families to try too!

The kids also wrote letters to next year students.  It was fun to read how excited they were about our year together!  It was even more fun to see how they perceive me and read all the advice they had to give!  I will be adding my own little messages and mailing them out later in the summer.

Other than that, we kept things pretty laid back.  We danced, we sang, we watched science videos and movies. We talked, we played and we laughed. We cleaned the classroom, cleaned out our desks and organized the classroom library. It was a great last week, filled with memories that will last a lifetime.

What special activities do you plan with your students for the last week of school?

  1. We went until the 27th too! It was starting to get pretty hot... I had them design, describe how to make it, and draw the best sundae in the world. I told them the sky's the limit! Any ingredients. Then they shared them. I told them to line up for a field trip. We marched down to the nearest freezer, pulled out the ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, skor pieces, and chocolate chips and made our own awesome sundaes. It helped cool us down! There's nothing like food, right?!
